Travelers can now bring home a piece of California Wine Country on their next Avelo Airlines flight.
The low-cost airline debuted its new “Wine Travels Free” program, which will take effect starting Saturday, May 25. Travelers who fly from Avelo’s base at Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) can bring along a case of wine for no extra charge.
“We know that visiting the vineyards and sampling Northern California’s world-famous wines is one of the most appealing reasons for visiting the Sonoma County region,” Avelo’s CEO and founder, Andrew Levy, shared in a statement. “At Avelo we love helping our customers discover new experiences and create lasting memories by offering affordable, convenient, and reliable air travel. It is our hope Avelo’s new Wine Travels Free program will make our customers’ trips to California Wine Country that much more enjoyable and memorable.”
Travelers must be at least 21 years old to check in a case of wine containing up to 12 bottles at the ticket counter at Sonoma County Airport for free. The wine must be packed in a protective case in order to be checked for free, while other checked bags come at an additional cost, depending on the route.
Avelo launched service from Sonoma County Airport in April 2021, considering it the best in the Bay Area for its convenience and ease of access to over 400 vineyards. The low-cost airline now offers nonstop flights from Boise, Burbank, Kalispell, Mont., Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Portland/Salem, and Bend/Redmond, Ore., just in time for the peak summer season.
Just last month, Avelo celebrated its third anniversary of flying, serving over 4.6 million passengers since it first launched. The airline flies out of smaller airports to popular tourist destinations like Sonoma County, offering travelers the benefit of no change and cancellation fees on all of its flights.
